Doula Support for TRICARE Families in Southern Maryland

Soldier reunites with family in a warm embrace.

Compassionate Support for Our Military Community

Who May Be Eligible?

Through the TRICARE Childbirth and Breastfeeding Support Demonstration, some expectant parents may qualify for covered services from a certified nonmedical labor doula who meets TRICARE’s participation requirements.

According to TRICARE, you may qualify for covered labor doula services if you:

  • Are enrolled in TRICARE Prime, TRICARE Prime Remote, or TRICARE Select
  • Are at least 20 weeks pregnant
  • Plan to give birth outside a military hospital or clinic
  • Receive maternity care for your birth from a TRICARE-authorized healthcare provider
  • Choose a TRICARE network doula or an eligible non-network participating doula

Covered doula care currently includes up to six hours of visits with a certified labor doula. These hours may be divided into 15-minute increments based on your needs. The benefit also includes one untimed visit for continuous support during labor and birth.

Virtual doula services are not covered under this demonstration. Labor doula care must be provided in person.

Please remember that eligibility is determined by TRICARE—not by On the Nest Doula Services. Your plan, provider status, place of birth, referrals, and other circumstances may affect coverage. Before receiving services, you should confirm your individual benefits and requirements with your TRICARE regional contractor.

The TRICARE childbirth doula benefit is specifically for qualified labor doula services. General postpartum doula care, overnight newborn care, and sibling doula services may not be included under this benefit. I will clearly explain which services may be billed to TRICARE and which services would require a separate private-pay agreement.

How the Process Works

Navigating insurance can feel confusing, especially while you are preparing for a baby. I will help make the process as clear and manageable as possible while respecting that final coverage decisions are made by TRICARE.

1. Schedule a Free Consultation

Our first step is a complimentary, no-pressure consultation. We will talk about your pregnancy, estimated due date, planned place of birth, support needs, and the type of TRICARE plan you have.

This conversation also gives you an opportunity to learn about my approach, ask questions, and decide whether I am the right doula for your family.

2. Confirm Your TRICARE Eligibility

Before services begin, contact your TRICARE regional contractor to verify that you meet the current requirements for labor doula coverage.

TRICARE states that eligible families in the United States are automatically enrolled in the Childbirth and Breastfeeding Support Demonstration when a claim for a covered service is submitted. However, it is still important to confirm your eligibility and any plan-specific requirements before care begins.

3. Determine Whether a Referral Is Needed

Most eligible TRICARE families do not need a referral for covered doula care.

However, if you have TRICARE Prime and plan to use a non-network participating doula, TRICARE states that you may need a referral from your primary care manager. Point-of-service charges may apply if a required referral is not obtained.

Ask your regional contractor whether a referral, authorization, or other documentation is required for your particular plan.

4. Review Services and Financial Responsibilities

Once eligibility has been discussed, we will review:

  • The labor doula services included in your agreement
  • How the six covered visit hours may be used
  • Support provided during labor and birth
  • Services that fall outside the TRICARE benefit
  • Any possible deductibles, cost-shares, or other financial responsibilities
  • Procedures for claims, payment, and supporting documentation

You will receive clear information before signing an agreement so you can make an informed decision without unexpected confusion.

5. Prepare for Birth Together

During our prenatal time, we can discuss your goals, concerns, birth preferences, comfort measures, partner support, and questions for your healthcare provider.

When labor begins, I provide continuous, nonmedical emotional and physical support through your untimed birth visit, according to our agreement and TRICARE’s coverage requirements.

6. Submit the Appropriate Claim Information

Covered services must meet TRICARE’s current requirements to qualify for payment. I will complete the provider responsibilities that apply to my participation status, but TRICARE makes the final determination regarding eligibility, coverage, and payment.

Keep copies of your referral, authorization, Explanation of Benefits, service agreement, receipts, and communications with TRICARE for your records.

Questions to Ask TRICARE

When you contact TRICARE, have your military identification card, plan information, estimated due date, and planned birth location available.

Consider asking:

  • Am I eligible for labor doula services through the TRICARE Childbirth and Breastfeeding Support Demonstration?
  • Is my current plan—TRICARE Prime, Prime Remote, or Select—eligible?
  • Does my planned civilian hospital, birth center, or home-birth arrangement meet the requirements?
  • Is my maternity-care provider TRICARE-authorized?
  • Is this doula listed as a network provider or an eligible non-network participating provider?
  • Do I need a referral from my primary care manager?
  • Do I need prior authorization before beginning doula services?
  • Will point-of-service fees apply if I do not obtain a referral?
  • Are there deductibles, copayments, or cost-shares for this benefit?
  • How may the six covered visit hours be divided between prenatal and postpartum visits?
  • Is the labor and birth visit untimed under my benefit?
  • Which services are excluded from coverage?
  • Are overnight postpartum, general postpartum, or sibling doula services covered under any part of my plan?
  • Who will submit the claims?
  • What documentation should I keep?
  • What should I do if a claim is denied?
  • Can I receive written confirmation of my eligibility and benefits?

Write down the representative’s name, the date and time of your call, and any confirmation or reference number you receive. If possible, request written confirmation through your secure TRICARE account.
